Bizim ev Sultanahnet meydanına çok yakındır. Canım sıkıldımı, hiç durmaz, turist kaynayan bu yaşam dolu, çeşit ceşit insanların kaynaştığı tarihi yere atarım kendimi. Dün de oradaydım. Tıpkı bir turist gibi amaçsızca sağa sola bakınarak dolaşırken arkamdan gelen ve ' Excuse me, Mr.' Diyen bir ses üzerine geri döndüm. Karşımda basit fakat temiz giyimli, kibarca gülümseyen bir çift duruyordu.
'Hah dedim kendi kendime, "İşte, İngilizce pratik yapabilecğim iki turist". Bende gülümsedim. Karşımda duran az önceki sorusunu yineledi.

- Excuse me Mr. Do you speak English?
- Yes, madam. How can I help you?
- We have just come to Istanbul and we do not know much about your city. We thought it would be better if a Turkish guy takes us around. Then we met you. Could you help us please?
- I'll happily do that for I have enough spare time. My name is Murat.
- Oh. Thanks that is very kind of you. My name is Jenny and he is James. He is my husband. We are glad to know you,Murat.
- Me too. Where are you from Jenny?
- We are from California of United States. We liked your city very much. So far we have met very friendly people.
- Oh, Thank You. I'm sure you will like Istanbul and we, Turks, as we talk more . ..how long are you going to stay in this city?
- Well, we decided to spend 3 days in here and 9 days in seeing other parts of the country. I wish we had more time.
- I hope after seeing the beauties of this city you will love this city. I have lived 24 years and yet I do not know it thoroughly.

Biz böyle sohbete dalmış giderken birden kulağımızın dibinde patlayan cırtlak çocuk sesleri ile elimizde olamadan irkildik. Ne oluyor diye şöyle sağıma soluma baktığımda kelimenin tam anlamıyla bir seyyar satıcı ordusu tarafından kuşatılmış olduğumuzu gördüm. Kimi elinde tuttuğu renkli diaları, kartpostalları, paketlenmiş lokumları, kimi boynuna astığı rengarenk deri heybeleri, kimi de kaval, fes, ağızlık türünden malları satabilmek için topyekün saldırıya geçmişlerdi. Besbelli beni de turist zannetmişlerdi. Her biri ya Almanca ya İngilizce bas bas bağırıyorlardı.

- Madam, madam! Do you want to buy a Turkish Delight?
- Hello! I have very good quality leather sacks.
- Please, Look at my puzzle rings Mr. They are very cheap!"
- Postcards... Postcards.... only a million a dozen.
- Excuse me Madam, Sir! Are you interested in hand-made Turkish cigarette holders? If you want to buy I'll make a special deal for you.

Anladığımız kadarıyla bu satıcılar çemberini yarabilmek için tek çıkar yol bir şeyler satın almaktı. Bu gerçeği gören James ağızlıkçı ile pazarlığa başlamıştı bile.

- Look, Jenny. This boy has cute cigarette holders. Let us buy some. Can you show us your wooden cigarette holders please?
- Yeah, Here are they. These ones are typical Turkish..
- Oh they look nice, but will any cigarettes fit in these cigarette holders?
- Yes, if not I can make the hole bigger with this knife.
- I like these three... Murat... can you give me a cigarette? I'd like to see if it fits in or not......hmmm..they are all right. Now let's start barganing.... How much do you ask for the three of these holder?
- My usual price for one pipe is 500.000 but because you are buying three I'll give you a special deal. 1.250.000 liras for the three ,o.k?.
- Ehm! What do you think Murat, Is that a fair price?
- Well, do you like barganing?
- Yes, It is fun!
- Then, go on barganing, I'm sure you can get a better price.
- Well boy, you heard my friend, now I should say 750.000 for the three.
- No, it is impossible. But I'll come down 250.000 more and make it a million. O.K?
- How about if we meet somewhere in the middle ? ... 900.000! I won't give you a lira more. It is my top price.
- All right. Here are the holders.

Bu oldukça hızlı, neşeli pazarlıktan sonra hepimizin dili damağı kurumuştu. Zaten satıcı kalabalığı da sıkılıp dağılmıştı. Az ilerde kahvane, pastane karışımı, içi dünyanın her tarafından çeşit çeşit insanlarla dolu Pudding shop, durulurmu, daldık içeri.

- Oh, it is so hot in here, isn't it.
- Then lets go upstairs. It is cooler there, Jenny.
- That is a good idea. Come on James, we are going upstairs.
- ............................................
- Let's sit by the window so that we can watch the street. The chairs aren't comfortable though, but it is better than the benches in the park down there.
- Huh, I feel exhausted! I want to drink a cup of Turkish coffee, without sugar.
- And you, James, What would you like to drink?
- I prefer cold beer. I am so thirsty.
- I'm thirsty, too. But I'll drink tea. Now let me call the waiter and tell him our orders.
- Excuse me?
- Yes, Sir. How can I help you? An ice cold beer, a coffee without sugar and a cup of tea please. Wait a second! James , do you smoke a water-pipe.
- A water -pipe? What is that, Murat?
- Oh, I thought you knew it. Well, It consists of a glass bottom, a brass top and a leather tube. In the bottle there is water which acts as a filter. Over the brass part is the pottery cup in which we put the tobacco and the charcoal.
- O.K Murat I'd love to try one.
- Hey, waiter! Bring us a water pipe in addition to the drinks.

Biz Blue Mosque area'yı bir yandan izleyip bir yandan akşamüstü saatlerin tadını çıkarırken
Jenny defterine bir şeyler yazdı sonra biraz daha düşünüp bir şeyler daha yazdı. Sonra yazdıklarını okumam için bana verdi.

It is our first day in here in Istanbul. It was very hot all day but it is nice and cool now. We met very friendly people one of them is Murat. He introduced Nargile to us , now James is enjoying it, I may try one later. Tomorrow we would like to visit Prince Islands. They are very close to Istanbul and Murat says the view is beautiful there. Oh.. before I forget, James bought cigarette holders today. Three for nearly a million. Any way it is not even two bucks.

Yazılanları keyifle okudum. Ertesi gün turistler vesilesi ile bir başka güzel gün geçireceğim düşüncesi ile gerindim. James ve Jenny'e cep telefonumu bıraktıktan sonra evin yolunu tuttum.

Tourist - We are just married, and my name
is Hans. (Biz yeni evliyiz, benim adım Hans)
Ali - Then you're both from Germany. (O halde
siz ikinizde Almansınız.)
Hans - That's right. I'm from Berlin ond Helga
is from Munchen.(Doğru, Ben Ber-
lin'liyim Helga ise Münih'li)
Ayşe - Are you students? (Öğrencimisiniz?)
Helga - l'm an English teacher and Hans is loo-
king for job. (Ben İngilizce öğretmeniyim, Hans
ise iş arıyor)
Ali - That means there are also unemployed in
your country. (Demekki sizin ülkenizde de işsiz-
lik var)
Helga - Ohh, unfortunately there are, After the
school I looked for jobs for 8 months. (Evet, ne
yazık ki var, Okuldan sonra ben sekiz ay iş ara-
dım.)
Ayşe - But it can't be as much it is in my country
because the estimated number of unemployed
in our country is 8 millions plus the immigrant
workers in your country. (Fakat bizim ülkede
ki kadar yüksek olamaz, ülkemizdeki işsizlerin
tahmin miktarı sekiz milyon, bir de buna sizin
ülkenizdeki göçmen işçileri katmak gerekiyor)

Helga and Hans - Thank You, thanks. (Teşek-
kürler)
Ali - I believe that the main cause of unemploy-
ment is the arms race. (inanıyorumki işsizliğin
asıl nedeni silahlanma yarışıdır)
Helga-What a nice thing it is to defend peace
and share the common ideas insipite of being
the youths of different countries (Değişik ülke-
lerin gençleri olmamıza karşın barışı savunma-
mız ve ortak idealleri paylaşabilmemiz ne güzel
şey!)
Ayşe - We are coming to Florya! (Florya'ya ge-
yoruz)
Ali - There are beaches in Florya but they are
overcrowded so we will take you to the Muni-
cipal Camping, if you like you can go to the neighboring
tourist camping (Florya'da plajlar
var fakat çok kalabalık, o nedenle biz sizi Bele-
diye Kampına götüreceğiz, eğer isterseniz kom-

Helga- Is there anarchy in Municipal Camping.
