When will teachers make friends with Computers?

Buket, Istanbul: We didn't have very useful computers 10 or 15 years ago. They were all amiga 500 or commodore thing. The children played with computers all day. This made parents very angry. The teachers most of them being mothers hated computers. The kids didn't study their lessons, ignored their homework assignments as computers were more interesting.. I think most teachers belive that computers are still toys. They don't realise that they are as important as pen and paper now. They can not figure it out as a means communication and education.

Nilay, Kızıltoprak: When our school shifted to payments through cash dispensers there was a great disapproval at school. Most of the women teachers grumbled for hours and criticised the admin. It was very funny. They still wanted to wait at the bank talking to people in the line on each payday. Four or five teachers used to fit in the small bank booth and tried to cash their money altogether. It took nearly twenty minutes then. They shouted and banged on the atm .There was such a strain that an old teacher was hospitalized once on a hot summer day.

Ergun, İzmir: Veteran teachers usually use three or four year old Ericsons or Nokia 5110s. When there is a call, they can't find the mobile in their bags. When they are able to find it, it is usually too late. They often miss the incoming calls. We know that they bribe their grandchildren to make the necessary adjustments on the menu. Once I noticed that she kept on turning the equipment on and off all day. Later I learned that she was unable to switch off the buzzer so she turned off the telephone instead.

Damla, Akşemsettin: I teach in a private school in Topkapi area. One morning an old teacher had to send a fax message. She was in real panic. I took her to the office and explained her step by step how to insert the paper and dial the number. When I was sure she understood I came back to the teachers room. Because I was teaching a 9 o'clock class that morning.
The principal told me what had happened later. They called the school and asked them why they kept on sending the same message 20 times. The stand-by teacher apologised and rushed to the office. The old woman was still trying to feed the paper into the machine. She was very unhappy. " I have been trying to send this letter for half an hour but it is always coming back" She complained.

Çiğdem, Yalova: We visited an old teacher with a group of friends on the last teacher's day. She had an old big green dial phone. And it was in a small box or cupboard on the wall. There was a padlock on the small cupboard. Since the front of the cupboard was glass I could see that there was an embroidered piece of cloth on the telephone.

Murat, Saray: I noticed that the teachers can not give up their telephone books. Some entries are in ink some of them are in pencil. Some of them are very difficult to read because either the telephone book is 10 years old or the writing disappear in time.

Gül, Tekirdağ: An old teacher was appointed as the head of material improvement and test prep. center of our school. As she had never touched a keyboard in her life she was in total panic. She cried all day at home the first day she heard about her promotion! Luckily there was a course at the factory where her daughter worked. She volunteered to join the course. She spent 4 evenings learning basic things and word there. Now she can type but the other teachers bring the exams back for error corrections.
