    TOEFL® Testing Program

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is used in college and university settings. Scores on the test are required by more than 4,300 two- and four-year colleges and universities, professional schools, and sponsoring institutions.

The test is offered on computer throughout most regions of the world. In areas where access to computer-based testing is limited, a supplemental paper-and-pencil version of the test is administered.

The Test of Spoken English (TSE®)

TSE is offered throughout the year at testing centers around the world. It is designed to evaluate the general oral language proficiency of nonnative speakers of English. Persons applying for teaching assistantships or professional licensing may be required to take the TSE test. During the TSE test, examinees are asked to give oral answers to questions that are presented in written and oral form. The spoken answers are recorded on audio tape. No writing is required.

The TSE test takes about 20 minutes. The fee for the TSE is US$125.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®)

TOEFL measures the language proficiency of nonnative English-speaking students who wish to study at colleges and universities where the instruction is in English. More than 2,400 two- and four-year academic institutions throughout the world use TOEFL scores. In addition, many exchange programs, scholarship agencies, medical certification and licensing agencies, and government agencies use TOEFL scores.

    Two Testing Formats:

    Computer-Based and Paper-Based

The computer-based TOEFL (CBT) is available throughout the year by appointment. Test center locations and appointment scheduling information can be found in the TOEFL Information Bulletin for Computer-Based Testing and on the TOEFL Web site at www.toefl.org/cbtindex.html.

The test consists of four sections: Listening, Structure, Reading, and Writing. The total testing time is approximately four hours. For the Writing section, examinees are assigned a single topic on which they must write a 30-minute essay. Test takers have the option of handwriting or typing their essays.

Each test taker is assigned to an individual workstation equipped with a computer and headset. It is not necessary for test takers to have previous computer experience to take the test. Before they begin, test takers go through several computer tutorials, which show them how to use a mouse, scroll, and use the testing icons. Test takers are also given questions at the end of each tutorial section so they can practice the basic computer skills needed before they begin the actual test.

After the test, examinees may view their unofficial score results for all sections of the test except Writing because the essays must be scored. If the essay is typed, official score reports are mailed from Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, New Jersey approximately two weeks after the test date. If the essay is handwritten, score reports are mailed approximately five weeks after the test.

The computer-based testing fee is US$110.

    TOEIC

What is the TOEIC? The TOEIC Test is the Test of English for International Communication. It is an Educational Testing Service test developed by the Chauncey Group at ETS.

Is TOEIC a well-known test? The TOEIC Test is by far the most widely used English language test in the world. More than 1.7 million tests were administered in 1997 alone.

What can TOEIC do for me? TOEIC will provide a numeric score and description of what you can do. TOEIC can also provide an accurate assessment of your English skills in order to obtain the best jobs, or for entrance into some US colleges and university programs.

Why does TOEIC provide a certificate? The certificate is your credential. Many companies require a TOEIC score to hire you. You may use the certificate to show an employer your English language ability.

Who recognizes the TOEIC score? More than 3000 companies, employers, colleges, universities and International English Programs.

Is this the Official TOEIC Test? Yes. You will receive the Official TOEIC Score Report and the Official diploma quality TOEIC Score Certificate.

Can I expect to see improvement in my test scores if I take the TOEIC multiple times and by how much? Yes. If you use the English language or take Intensive English courses almost every test taker will see improvement in their scores. How much of an improvement depends on the length of time between test administrations, and how much you work at improving your English.

What is a good TOEIC test score? This is dependent on a number of factors. TOEIC scores are from 10 to 990. Your age, your objectives, and the amount of English language training and experience you have.

What are the fastest growing areas for the TOEIC test? South America and Europe.

How long are the TOEIC test results good for? Your score is valid for one year.

Can I purchase additional Official TOEIC certificates? Yes. You may purchase as many copies as you need for job or college/university applications.

How long will it take to get my test results? You will receive your results by mail within 7-10 business days after you take the test.
